Completion of control system for semi-automated car storage tower

This month has seen the successful completion of a 9-month project to develop, build and install a complete control system to control a multi-level car storage tower at a car dealership in the North East of England. The storage tower, originally supplied by a European manufacturer around 12 years ago, had been out of operation for several months due to the failure of several critical control components and the unavailability of compatible replacement parts.

PCD Ltd were contracted to replace the entire control system and re-commission the tower, which meant starting again with a new control philosophy and using the latest technology components to build a robust control system which should have many years of life.

Vehicles can be moved in or out of the storage tower either at ground level or at the first floor showroom level. Desired vehicle movements are selected on an HMI screen with the system then automatically performing the selected movement to place a vehicle into one of the 30 storage locations, or to collect a car from a storage location and deliver it to the showroom or ground level car park.
